G'day Voters,I’ve decided to stand as an Independent for Braddon in the state election because Tasmanians need leaders with vision, integrity, common sense and practical experience. Tasmanians need true independent representation, NOT politicians that are controlled by parties, corporations and faceless men and women.I'm a father of 3 great sons and grandfather of my 8-month-old granddaughter. My family has been in Braddon for five generations and I have lived in Braddon all my life. We have all been life-long contributors to our community.I'm passionate, innovative, and a good communicator. Most importantly, I have respect for people from all walks of life.
I'm also not afraid to speak my mind and have plenty of experience fighting for issues that need a champion. Whether it's poor road construction, failed plantation schemes, promoting GE free, farmers markets and standing against corruption, I've proven willing to take on the vested interests.
I was an independent elected member for 9 years in local government, so I understand what it takes to get the right political outcomes. I've owned businesses in tourism, agriculture and manufacturing. I also have trade (plumbing) and UTas (business) qualifications, alongside my 60 years of hard knocks from the university of life. With these skills and experience I truly believe I can represent you properlyPlease consider voting for independent candidates and remember it is only Liberal and Labor that say you need a majority Government. It's yours, your children’s and your grandchildren’s future you are voting for. There is power in your vote, please use it wisely.Regards
Malcolm Ryan

CORE POLICY
Build a $50m Braddon Food Hub to support local agriculture, create better health outcomes and ease the cost-of-living crisis! It's simply common sense.
Cost of living
If elected, I can help ensure power prices stay as low as possible and drive programs for backyard veggie patches to tie into the Food Hub. Both of these will be a great practical start in helping with the cost-of-living crisis.
Stadium
I played over 200 games of football in Tas, NSW and QLD. I am fully supportive of a Tasmanian team, but not at any cost. Like it or not, Tasmania cannot afford a new stadium! We need a better deal for Tasmania!
Budget Repair
We need to be honest about the $10 billion problem and take a 10-year approach to fixing Tasmania's budget. We should NOT cut back public services. I agree with Saul Eslake. We need to look at raising taxes on the rich (e.g. higher rego on luxury cars), major companies paying more to access Tasmania's natural resources, a better deal on national GST revenue, and assessing all infrastructure project timelines.
We must assess all past pork barrelling waste by Liberal and Labor.Asset Sales
I'm generally opposed to assets sales, but we should wait to see what Saul Eslake says in his second report.
Major Project Delivery
There should be an independent review of major project delivery in Tasmania. It should be compared with global best practice models for infrastructure delivery. The results should be fully open to the public and unredacted.
Stability
If elected I will offer to provide stability to whomever forms government, but I will retain my independence on every issue put before parliament.
Environment
I will fight for stronger environmental laws that our children and grandchildren will be proud of. We need a strong state EPA to help deliver environmental protection.
Democracy
Safeguarding democracy is not just a duty but a necessity to ensure that every individual has a voice. Proper governance serves the interests of the many, not the few. I will continue to fight for the cornerstones of democracy.
Housing
To have a house to live in should be a right not just an investment opportunity. There should be stronger laws, and a real ombudsman, to protect the rights of good tenants. Multiple occupancy properties, tiny homes, restrictions on whole house Airbnb's and more support for first home buyers should all be part of the solution.
Health
Tasmania is in a health crisis; we need a new approach. Encouragement for better health choices by Tasmanians is one of my priorities. It starts with good food. We should also look at incentives for permanent health professionals instead of locums.
Education
50% of Tasmanian's have inadequate reading skills. This is not acceptable. Tasmania needs a different approach to education based on global best practices. A Braddon Food Hub would support a Healthy Schools program.
Roads
Our road construction and maintenance has become a short-term strategy resulting in road failure and a pothole and patching regime. We need to address this to ensure our roads are safe, and built using best practise. It will cost less over the long term.
Manufacturing
Braddon can become a powerhouse centre of manufacturing excellence with greater defence opportunities, high end state-of-the-art products and new industries like waste to energy plants.
Energy
Tasmania's energy should be for Tasmanian's first and foremost, then the surplus used to attract new industry. Marinus should be scrapped in favour of cheaper power for Tasmania. We should build on our renewable energy advantage. We should support wave swell energy (if it proves viable) especially for King Island.
Agriculture
There is a significant opportunity for agriculture in Braddon. My core policy is to build a $50m Food Hub where we value add to agriculture products and support intensive small farming operations. We should do much more to support hemp production and the downstream hemp industry. A return to intensive small farming enterprises is a must.
Aquaculture
I will push for a transition to land based Salmon farming, which is happening around the world.
Fishing
Greater support for well managed recreational fishing in Bass Strait, over corporate interests.
Tourism
There is a story around every corner in Braddon and this needs to be promoted. An incentive to turn tourists right after disembarking the Spirit. We have waterfalls, wilderness, wildlife, wild seas, mining, aboriginal history, heritage, and agriculture all in the one place. Let's show the world.
Braddon Local Investment Fund
I will push to create a Braddon based local investment fund to support start-ups and help grow small to medium businesses.
